Election 2015: Ivan Lewis holds Bury South for Labour

articlemain

Ivan Lewis has held the Bury South constituency seat for Labour with 45 per cent of the vote.

Mr Lewis, the former chief executive of the Federation charity in Manchester, received 21,272 votes, beating Conservative candidate Daniel Critchlow who gained 16,350 votes (35 per cent).

Mr Lewis, who was first elected as an MP in the Labour landslide of 1997, said: “I still want to be an agent for change. People can get cynical in politics but I still get a buzz from serving the area where I am from.

“To be elected for a fifth term is remarkable. It is a privilege. But with that privilege comes responsibility.”

Mr Lewis, the shadow Northern Ireland secretary, campaigned to get the community on side after many distanced themselves from the party as a result of Ed Miliband’s comments on Israel during the Gaza war last summer.

He had also promised to fight antisemitism in his constituency, where 10 per cent of voters are Jewish, the fifth largest proportion in the country.

Ukip candidate Seamus Martin received 6,299 votes (13 per cent); Liberal Democrats candidate Paul Ankers received 1,690 votes (3.58 per cent); and with 1,434 votes (3.04 per cent), Green party representative Glyn Heath came in fifth place.
