Energy Secretary Ed Davey has condemned an antisemitic incident at a synagogue in his constituency.
A sign stating “child murderers” was fixed to the front door of Kingston Synagogue in Surrey last week.
It prompted the shul’s rabbi, Samuel Landau, to say he felt less safe in the area.
Mr Davey, the Liberal Democrat MP for Kingston and Surbiton, had not commented on the incident in the days after it was first reported.
But on Wednesday he told the JC: “This incident is totally unacceptable and outrageous however people are feeling about Gaza.
“The local police have a very good relationship with the Jewish community.
“But there is more work to be done in encouraging interfaith dialogue and engaging and making constructive arguments rather than resorting to intimidation.”
Mr Davey has been among the Lib Dems leading calls for an arms embargo to be imposed on Israel following the violence in Gaza.
