One of Britain's biggest supermarkets was forced to pull kosher baked beans from its shelves after refusing to bow to demands from suppliers to raise prices in the wake of the Brexit vote.

While Tesco shoppers were fretting over the disappearance of Marmite, Jewish customers noticed kosher beans had been withdrawn from stores.

Many took to social media this week to express their concern, and to appeal for the return of what they said were an essential part of their kosher diet.

But the issue has now been resolved, with Tesco moving to assure customers that a disagreement with suppliers over the cost of the product had ended.

A Tesco spokesperson said: "We momentarily suspended sales of kosher beans due to an issue with the supplier over cost.

"The issue has now been resolved. It is quite normal for these things to happen.

"We're proud to offer a delicious range of kosher products and meals in many of our stores and we're pleased that kosher baked beans will be back on our shelves soon."

Earlier this month, the supermarket was engaged in a standoff with major supplier Unilever, after the company demanded price rises due to the falling value of the pound.

Unilever, which produces Marmite and Ben and Jerry's ice cream, stopped deliveries to Tesco stores, prompting shortages.
