Death of ex- JC junior page editor

articlemain

Sara Freedland, the wife and mother of journalists Michael and Jonathan Freedland, and herself the former editor of the JC's Junior Chronicle, died on Tuesday.

Sara Hocherman was born in Petach Tikva on November 1 1936.

Her turbulent story is told in her son Jonathan's book, Jacob's Gift. Her father, Avraham, was a religious Zionist who persuaded Sara's mother Feige to leave London for Palestine. But Avraham failed to make a living and finally Feige took Sara and her brother back with her to London. But Feige was killed in the last raid of the London Blitz.

Sara initially went back to Israel. Things did not work out and finally she returned to London, where she made a long and happy marriage with Michael Freedland. The couple had three children.

Sara, who also wrote children's books, became ill with neurological encephalitis in 1980.
