Hendon Labour Party has elected David Pinto-Duschinsky to stand against sitting MP Matthew Offord at the next general election.

Mr Pinto-Duschinsky, a member of the GMB trade union and an adviser to then chancellor Alistair Darling in the last Labour government, beat Mike Katz, who ran against Mr Offord at the last general election.

Mr Katz, who reduced Mr Offord’s majority at the last election, did not manage to convince the voters.

Responding to the result on Twitter Mr Katz said: “Life, and politics, can be rough sometimes - but there have been some lovely comments here tonight, so thx to everyone. You know who you are.”

He congratulated Mr Pinto-Duschinsky, the son of a Holocaust survivor, on his victory.

Mr Pinto-Duschinsky said he recognised that the Labour party “went backwards” at the last local elections and the concerns of the Jewish community in Hendon must be addressed.

He said: "I want to change our country and change the way we do politics. That’s why I am running to be your Labour candidate.

"And that’s why, from day one, I’ve run a different kind of campaign. All too often, Labour selections are about old style machine politics. But I believe local members and local communities should come first."

He said he did not look to get "outside endorsements" opting for spending "months meeting with local members and building a people-powered campaign.

"The results have been amazing. I’ve attracted support from all sides of the local party."

He added: "My campaign shows what a genuine grassroots approach that unites the party can achieve. It’s that approach I want to bring to winning Hendon for Labour."
