The Chief Rabbi will officially become a peer on October 27 when he enters the House of Lords as Lords Sacks of Aldgate.

He will be sponsored by Lord Winston and the former Archbishop of Canterbury Lord Carey.

Explaining why he had chosen to nominate the East End of London district, he said; “My late father sold cloth in Commercial Road and my grandmother ran Frumkins wine shop. I wanted not to forget my roots. That’s where I used to help out help when I was a child and where my earliest memories are.”

Aldgate is also associated with his office since the Great Synagogue in Duke’s Place used to be the seat of the Chief Rabbi until it was destroyed in the Second World War.

As yet, there is no date set for his maiden speech in the chamber – it is not traditional for new peers to make it on the day they are introduced.

He said he look forward to speaking on behalf of the community as well as bringing a Jewish voice to debates on moral and social issues.

“I will be attending as regularly as I can without sacrificing any of the work I do for the community,” he said. “I want to stay close to the community.”
