Fans of the West London club were accused of 'racist behaviour' during a Europa League match in Budapest in December

Chelsea FC is facing the prospect of a partial stadium closure after football authorities confirmed that they would open disciplinary proceedings over alleged antisemitism.

Fans of the West London club have been accused of antisemitic chanting during a Europa League match against Hungarian club Vidi, in Budapest in December.

The songs were believed to be aimed at fans of rivals Tottenham Hotspur. There have also been allegations of anti-Jewish chanting at domestic fixtures.

In the aftermath of the alleged incidents, a Chelsea spokesman questioned the “brain power” of some of the club’s fans, while chairman Bruce Buck condemned “a few mindless individuals at some of our recent matches”.

Uefa announced on Tuesday morning “in relation to the alleged racist incidents that occurred… disciplinary proceedings have been instigated”.

It followed an investigation and report by the football administrators’ own Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector. One charge of "racist behaviour" will be decided on February 28.

A partial closure of Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge home ground for upcoming Europa League fixtures has been mooted, which is the minimum penalty for the charge under Uefa regulations.
