Charity fundraiser avoids jail over death of cyclist

articlemain

A woman who raised thousands of pounds for Jewish charities has escaped jail for accidentally killing a great-grandmother with her Porsche sports car.

Tracy Capal, from Whitefield in north Manchester, pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention at Chester Crown court.

The 51-year-old, who has raised money for charities such as the Nicky Alliance Day Care Centre for Jewish elderly people, clipped the bicycle wheel of 77-year-old Margaret Ward last November while she turned to park her sports car in a Porsche garage in Handforth, near Wilmslow in Cheshire.

Mrs Ward was a retired primary school caretaker and travelled daily on her bike, often to visit her husband’s grave.

Ms Capal, a speechwriter whose Facebook page shows her socialising with celebrities such as Simon Cowell and retail mogul Sir Philip Green, had a six month jail term suspended for two years. Judge Elgan Edwards handed her 200 hours of unpaid work and a two year driving ban.

Ms Capal was part of the successful British team at the Maccabiah Games in Israel this summer, winning a medal in the masters golf event.
