Two Charedi men have admitted buying computers from looters on the first night of the London riots.

Joseph Landau and Heskel Brauer, both 24 and members of Stamford Hill's strictly Orthodox community, were seen separately buying them on August 6 as violence erupted.

A woman saw them with the computers at Tottenham Hale Retail Park and took their car registration numbers.

At Wood Green Crown Court, they were both given eight-month jail sentences, suspended for 18 months, after admitting handling stolen goods. They must both also do 80 hours of unpaid work. The pair, who are both married with children, do not know each other.

Landau and Brauer had gone to the retail park after Shabbat to find out why people were gathering and why a police helicopter was circling the area. When men approached them selling items looted from a Currys store, building company worker Landau bought a computer for £65, and yeshivah student Brauer paid £50 for a similar model.

Jonathan Goldberg QC, defending, said the men were remorseful and would not re-offend.

He said: "They would not have taken part had they known how outrageous the riots would become. They made full admissions and gave the computers back." The court heard a witness statement from Rabbi Eli Schwartz, head of Brauer's yeshivah, in which he said he was so ashamed of his student's actions that he had made him clean the toilets at the yeshivah since August as punishment.
