Cathedral bans Gaza exhibition

Worcester Cathedral has cancelled an exhibition of Gaza children's artwork.

The Loss of Innocence exhibition was co-ordinated by Rod Cox and was due to be run by the Worcester Palestine Friendship. It had a controversial airing at Manchester Cathedral last August, where Representative Council president Lucille Cohen accused it of "disseminating hatred" because of the inflammatory captions next to the drawings. One showed an Israeli soldier standing astride 12 bodies and using unmanned aircraft to kill people.

Rev Peter Atkinson, Dean of the cathedral, said: "We were approached by two private individuals about the exhibition. But as the day approached we became aware that WPF were running the exhibition. We were also made aware that the group were planning on holding a talk during the exhibition, and have their own stewards to engage people with the issues. None of this had been agreed."

Lorna Archer of WPF said: "We were very disappointed not to be able to hold the exhibition in the cathedral and can't really understand the reasoning."

The exhibition is now taking place at the city's Bromyard Road Methodist Church.
