A youth-led campaign is underway to restore a vandalised Jewish memorial on a remaining section of the Berlin Wall.
Paint over Prejudice, an initiative organised by the FZY, hopes to raise £6,000 to have the mural repainted to remove significant antisemitic graffiti.
The Vaterland, painted by Günther Schaefer on the East Side Gallery, showing a Star of David over the German flag, has repeatedly been vandalised since 1990.
Joe Woolf, mazkir (national director) of FZY, said: “We didn’t want it to just be painted over again. A protective glaze will mean if there is any further graffiti it can be washed off without damaging the original painting.”
The fundraising is being organised with the help of year 13 school pupils across Britain, with events being held in London, Manchester and Glasgow to raise money for the campaign.
As part of the project, FZY is also organising an educational trip for 25 pupils to travel to Berlin to meet Mr Schaefer.
The campaign has gained the support of Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, the Jewish Agency for Israel and March for the Living.
