Board of Deputies delays naming Parliamentary group supporters

The Board of Deputies has again refused to reveal the names of Parliamentarians supporting a new group to promote Jewish issues.

MPs returned to work on Monday, but the Board said no further details on the All-Party Parliamentary Group on British Jews would be released until the House of Lords returns from its summer recess – on October 8.

The Board will form the secretariat to the new group, a move which led to widescale communal tension when it was announced last month.

None of the existing groups which works on issues such as Israel advocacy, antisemitism and Jewish community security were consulted in advance by the Board.

A Board spokesman said 40 parliamentarians had pledged to join the APPG by Monday. But he claimed their names could not be divulged as the group could not be formally established until the Lords reconvenes.

The names of the group’s officers would also not be made available until then, he said.
