Board merger talks still on despite JLC row

articlemain

Merger talks between the Board of Deputies and the Jewish Leadership Council are due to resume the week after Rosh Hashanah despite the row between them over a new political group.

JLC leaders were furious last month at not being consulted over the Board’s decision to form the secretariat of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on British Jews, set to launch in the autumn.

Board president Vivian Wineman said this week: “We remain committed to looking at the options for the best ways to promote the community’s interests… including the possibility of creating a new organisation with the JLC.”

A JLC source said that “a meeting of the liaison group is scheduled for after Rosh Hashanah — there is nothing to add at this stage”.

Mr Wineman and JLC chairman Mick Davis have not met since the row over the APPG but are due to sit in the same box at the new Chief Rabbi’s installation on Sunday.

A set of proposals known as the “Ten Propositions” was presented to deputies in June, which includes a new body consisting of two chambers, an elected president and a cabinet appointed by the president.

The next step is to appoint independent consultants who will be asked to glean the views of deputies.

Meanwhile, the JLC is yet to declare support for the new APPG. The JLC source said that “a decision will be taken only after the officers of the group are appointed, the level of parliamentary support becomes clear and the agenda of the group is spelt out”.
