Bagels for counter PSC Brighton protest

articlemain

Supporters of Israel turned out in force to counter the national day of boycott activity at the weekend.

Members of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) and boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) planned protests across the UK against Israeli company SodaStream, which is based in West Bank settlement, Mishor Adumim. But the focus fell on Brighton, where the company’s EcoStream store is located.

Around 50 demonstrators gathered outside the store on Saturday. They were met by a similar number of activists from Sussex Friends of Israel, who responded to boycott chants by handing out bagels and baked goods to passers-by as part of their “Bagels against bigotry” campaign.

“The turnout has been superb. We outnumbered the anti-Israeli groups and at the same time had a party,” said SFI member Simon Cobbs.

A Sussex police spokesman said boycott supporters “were vociferously challenged by pro-Israeli supporters”. He confirmed no public order offences occurred and no arrests were made.
