Armed men threaten staff in crowded deli

articlemain

Armed robbers threatened staff at a Manchester kosher deli before escaping with a till last Thursday evening.

Three men, carrying a knife and a hammer, entered Shefa Mehadrin deli in Prestwich at around 8pm.

A 23-year-old employee, who had been behind the stolen till, said: "I was worried I would get stabbed. One of them tried to open the till with his knife."

Cash was strewn over the pavement outside the Bury New Road premises as the men fled in a car.
Store owner Motti Gershon gave chase in his car but "didn't get the number-plate because they covered it with a black bag".

Around 20 people were in the shop at the time. Police closed the store but it reopened an hour later, with shoppers returning to buy their Shabbat provisions.

Mr Gershon, 39, who came to Prestwich from Jerusalem over 20 years ago, said the raiders had taken very little money as his tills are emptied regularly.

A 25-year-old Salford man was arrested on suspicion of robbery and was released on police bail until September 21.
