Antisemitism in an Amazon parcel horrifies Jewish woman

articlemain

An Amazon employee has been fired after putting an antisemitic note in a delivery which was sent to a Jewish woman.

The customer, who does not wish to be named, had ordered a toy for a young relative, but when the parcel arrived, it included a handwritten note in the packaging which said “greetings from Uncle Adolf”.

The employee is believed to have targeted the woman because of her “Jewish-sounding surname”.

The woman, who is reportedly in her thirties, was so upset that she had to take two days off work.

Liran Meydat, an Israeli friend of the woman, said that “when she told us about the note she was shaking”.

Mr Meydat said that the police had taken the note “very seriously”, arriving at the house within 20 minutes of a complaint being made, and reportedly taking the note away to be forensically tested.

He described his friend as a “very gentle and humble lady”, who “does a lot for charity - both Jewish and non-Jewish.”

“British Jews feel scared to speak out,” he said. “I'm an Israeli and have lived here for a few years so I don't feel scared.

"When I heard what had happened it made me think about my grandfather who showed me the number on his arms from the Polish death camps. He lost all his family there.”

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan police said: “Police were called to an address on 22 December 2016 to reports of an offence of malicious communications.

“Officers attended and spoke to the female victim, aged in her 30s, who reported receiving an antisemitic note inside a package she ordered.

“This is being treated as a hate crime. No arrests have been made. Inquiries continue.”

An Amazon spokesperson said: “'We take this incident seriously and have apologised to the customer. We have investigated the matter and dismissed the individual involved.”
