'Angel of Mostar' walks with giants at Opening Ceremony

articlemain

A Jewish children's campaigner who works to build links between Israeli and Palestinian youth was one of the Olympic flag bearers at Friday's Opening Ceremony.

Sally Becker, who earned the name "Angel of Mostar" for her work helping children in Bosnia and then Kosovo, was named a Goodwill Ambassador for the interfaith organisation "Children of Peace" three years ago.

During the 2006 Lebanon War, she helped civilians who were trapped in conflict zones along the border.

She was an artist based in Brighton when she became involved in humanitarian work, supporting aid convoys backed by the Bosnian Jewish community and CBF (World Jewish Relief).

She wrote on Twitter: "What an amazing experience. Tonight I walked with giants."

Ms Becker was joined as a flag bearer of London 2012 by conductor Daniel Barenboim, founder of the West-East Divan orchestra. The organisation works to bring together Arab and Israeli performers and break down the divide between the two groups.
