The man who cracked the Eggheads

articlemain

It was just one against five and the odds were stacked against Edgware Masorti Synagogue member Howard Bluston.

The pensions adviser, 70, was the last man standing for his team Acorn Antiques in the BBC2 quiz show Eggheads last Friday and he was facing five of the country's top quiz champions.

But although his team-mates had been eliminated, Mr Bluston (third from right), proved more than a match for the resident Eggheads, sending them to a rare defeat and scooping £15,000 in prize money for his team.

The mixed Jewish/non-Jewish team hailed from Acorn tennis club in Harrow, which is chaired by Stephen Phillips, a member of Stanmore Synagogue.

Mr Phillips, who was the quiz team reserve, said, "When I suggested to the members that we should enter a team for Eggheads, I never thought in a million years we would pass the audition, let alone beat arguably the best quiz team in the UK."
