A word of advice on how to deal with looters on the Letters page of Monday's Guardian, from the granddaughter of an Orthodox rabbi swept up in the 1960s riots on an estate in Rochester, NY. Martha Jean Baker writes: "Shortly after the riots, several of his neighbours came to him and said... 'We are ashamed, what can we do?'"

Ms Baker's grandfather suggested he would leave the door of his synagogue unlocked overnight. "The next day when he went to the synagogue it was filled with TVs, shoes, clothing...He called the police, who asked where the loot came from. He said: 'I have no idea'. He would not give names and the estate returned to peace."
