An Orthodox Jewish female comedian has won the Best Comedy Award at this year’s Greater Manchester Fringe Festival.

Rachel Creeger heard on Tuesday that her show, It’s No Job for a Nice Jewish Girl, had scooped the prize. She told the JC it still hadn’t quite sunk in.

“I didn’t even know I’d been assessed for it, so it’s really exciting”, she said.

“For me, as a Modern Orthodox woman, to receive recognition as a stand-up comedian from both inside and outside the community means a great deal.

“This show is unashamedly Jewish but explores subjects that everyone can identify with, what it's like to have roots in a culture separate from your place of birth and how your heritage shapes who you become”.

Mrs Creeger is now heading further north, bringing her act to the Edinburgh Fringe, which begins on Friday.

“I’ve been doing previews for a month”, she said.

I’ll be doing 20 shows up in Edinburgh – but not on Shabbat, obviously”.
