Michael Winner's Golders Green lunch

A hungry Michael Winner turned up in Golders Green the other day, looking for a spot of lunch. Which was a pity, as it was Saturday.

“I had no idea there were so many frummers,” confessed the Sunday Times food writer in his latest column: “Nearly everything was shut” — even Carmelli’s, where he once bought a “great bagel”.

At times, you really wonder what planet some celebrities inhabit but judge him kindly for he did go on to a good story about the time he offered Sir John Gielgud a boiled gefilte fish ball. Seeing the great actor’s expression after taking a bite, he asked him what he thought of the Shabbat treat. “That’s the only time I saw Gielgud lost for words.”
