Jackie Hoffman's reaction to Laura Dern's win was the best moment of the Emmys

Polite, diplomatic applause? Not for Jackie!

Jackie Hoffman may not have won the Emmy for her performance in Feud: Bette and Joan but she certainly won the column-inches war.

Laura Dern may have taken home the trophy for her part in HBO miniseries Big Little Lies but Jewish actress Jackie Hoffman’s reaction to losing out on the award was all anyone was talking about today.

The tradition is for nominees who miss out on the big prize to applaud the victor gracefully. Hoffman's reaction was more like that of the average person in the street who misses out on a longed-for promotion or bonus.

Hoffman may have been kidding. It wouldn’t be the first time she’s played a practical joke and her Twitter feed after the event suggests that even if the initial disappointment had been genuine, she was determined to play the reaction for laughs.
