Eggs-tra rabbinical duties

Few rabbis’ early morning duties include collecting newly laid eggs from the hens or milking the goats.

But Rabbi Marc Soloway, of the Conservative Bonai Shalom in Boulder, Colorado, has been learning the agricultural ropes.

The local Jewish community has set up a co-op to encourage the eating of organic produce in partnership with local farmers.

The environmental initiatives of the London-born rabbi, 49, a former student of the Leo Baeck College, have won him national recognition as one of America’s 28 most inspiring rabbis this year, according to the Forward newspaper.

Last year, he and his congregation experienced the less benign side of nature when their synagogue was wrecked in floods that struck last autumn.
