Monica Lewinsky is to be played by actress Beanie Feldstein in the next series of American Crime Story - with Ms Lewinsky herself producing.

The anthology series, whose previous two seasons were about the OJ Simpson trial and the murder of Gianni Versace, will explore depict the White House intern's affair with President Bill Clinton and the impeachment proceedings that followed.

It will air in September next year, just weeks before the 2020 presidential election.

Ms Feldstein recently featured in the TV adaptation of Taika Waititi’s What we do in the Shadows and the film Booksmart.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Ms Lewinsky said she had been “hesistant” and “more than a little scared” about taking on the production.

“After a lengthy dinner meeting with [American Crime Story producer Ryan Murphy], I came to understand even more clearly how dedicated he is to giving a voice to the marginalised in all of his brilliant work,” she said.

“I’m privileged to work with him and the other talented people on the team, and I’m privileged to have this opportunity.”

Mr Murphy told the magazine that when he ran into Ms Lewinsky at a party he told her: “Nobody should tell your story but you, and it’s kind of gross if they do.

"If you want to produce it with me, I would love that; but you should be the producer, and you should make all the goddamn money.”

Ms Lewinsky added: “People have been co-opting and telling my part in this story for decades. In fact, it wasn’t until the past few years that I’ve been able to fully reclaim my narrative; almost 20 years later.”
