In 2004, Ruti Zahavi's life changed forever. Her four-year-old son, Afik, was killed by a Kassam rocket in Sderot, in the Negev. Ms Zahavi was critically injured in the attack - her right leg was amputated and she was hospitalised for three months - and unable to attend Afik's funeral. Four years on, Ms Zahavi, 35, is finally rebuilding her life, and her first goal is to create a memorial garden for her son.

She was in London last week appealing to the Jewish community to help her raise money for the garden, to be built near her home in Sderot.

"Innocent people are being killed. They didn't do anything to anyone. They just want to live in peace. If you want to fight, fight against the army."

Ms Zahavi, who is still undergoing psychological rehabilitation, was brought to London by One Family, the organisation which helps victims of terror in Israel. She says: "It has taken until now for me to start living again."

She has recently begun studying art and works for a few hours a day teaching people to make jewellery. She hopes the garden will be a place where children can play without being concerned about incoming rockets.
