Robin Ellison launches the U Party in an attempt to turn around the pension system

articlemain

Introducing Robin Ellison — the founder of the newly launched U Party, which aims primarily to reform the pension system.

Mr Ellison, the former National Association of Pension Funds chairman, wants to be the next MP for Hampstead and Kilburn, north London — a seat currently held by Glenda Jackson.

A partner at Pinsent Masons where he is head of strategic development, Mr Ellison, 61, tells People: “The UK pensions system is in a state of disarray and we think our policies can fix that.

“By next year’s election, 50 per cent of the population will be over 55 and many people will be living longer. This is an issue that needs addressing.”

He is calling for a simpler regulatory regime for workplace pensions and a simple tax regime for retirement savings. The party also aims to raise awareness of key issues concerning long-term government policy on pensions. He hopes to field up to 12 parliamentary candidates for next year’s general election.

Mr Ellison, who has lived in Hampstead for 30 years, says that “although it is early days, feedback so far from people seems to very sympathetic. We will wait and see.”

A visiting Professor in pensions law at the Cass Business School at City University, London, Mr Ellison founded the Association of Pensions Lawyers.

He is chairman of the National Association of Pension Funds. He has written several books on pensions including Pensions Law and Practice.
