Avid reader Nicola Solomon has landed her dream job.

She has been appointed general secretary of The Society of Authors. Ms Solomon, a lawyer at leading media firm Finers Stephens Innocent (FSI), where she has worked for the past 25 years, will take up her new post in March. With more than 8,000 members, the Society serves the interests of professional writers.

Ms Solomon, who is married to Rabbi Jonathan Wittenberg of New North London Synagogue, tells People: "I wasn't looking for another job but this is a dream one for me. I am a mad reader and have worked with the Society for a while." She has been a solicitor to the organisation for more than 20 years and a member since 1993.

"I can use all my legal experience to give advice to authors and I will be campaigning on issues such as e-rates, library cuts, public lending rights, defamation laws, freedom of speech - anything that affects the lives of authors really."

Ms Solomon qualified in 1984. She says it will be "extraordinarily odd" to leave FSI. "I have lots of friends there and hopefully we will keep in touch. I am very excited for the new role. And my three children think it's the coolest job ever as I will get to meet lots of authors." Does she have a favourite? "There's no way I could say that. What a hostage to fortune that would be."
