Karen Last modernises your Seder table

articlemain

If you are looking for ways to jazz up your Seder table this Pesach, designer Karen Last believes she has the answer.

The founder of Danke, which sells luxury Judaica products, she has come up with a range of unique matzah covers which she says reflect contemporary Jewish taste for fine art.

A former photographer, Mrs Last, 46, set up Danke to create challah covers and "tallit/tefillin" bags because she was "fed up with those velvet things with gold stripes. I felt that Judaica needed to be brought into the 21st century and given a modern twist."

She has since had a demand for matzah covers and has even fielded requests for special Afikoman bags. The mother-of-five who works from her home in Golders Green, north London, is inspired by artists including Andy Warhol and Picasso.

"I like the blend of old and new that Danke embodies. Judaism is rooted in tradition; Shabbat candles and Kiddush wine. But that doesn't mean everything has to look traditional."

She also designs bespoke products and says a range of shofar bags are in the pipeline. She has been in touch with Selfridges about stocking her goods.
