A huge security operation was put into operation on Monday as US President Donald Trump arrived in Israel for a two-day visit.

More than 10,000 police officers  have been tasked with securing the president’s stay in Jerusalem – where he will stay in a bullet-proof room in the city’s King David Hotel.

Israel’s Operation “Blue Shield” will see all roads used by the President and his huge entourage sealed off and cleared of traffic in an unprecedented security sweep.

“The level of security will be at its highest," said Micky Rosenfeld, a spokesman for the Israeli police.

"It is a top priority that there is close coordination with the US, making sure the visit goes exactly according to plan."

Mr Trump will be met at Tel Aviv airport by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and then will be taken to meet President Reuven Rivlin.

Earlier on Monday an apparent vehicle ramming attack in Tel Aviv had left five people injured – with two said to be in serious condition.

From there Mr Trump will head to Jerusalem’s Old City – and in the evening he will again meet the Israeli Prime Minister.

Mr Trump will also visit the Western Wall – the first sitting American president to do so – and on Sunday hinted that he had yet to decide whether to ask Mr Netanyahu to join him.

Last week the White House said the visit to the Kotel would be made only with the rabbi who oversees it.

But in an interview with Israel Hayon on Sunday, Mr Trump said: “We have great respect and friendship for Netanyahu.

“Going with the rabbi is more traditional but that could change.”

An invitation for Mr Nentanyahu to join Mr Trump at the Wall would infuriate the Palestinianians and wider Arab world.

On Tuesday, Mr Trump will head to Bethlehem to meet with Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian Authority leader.

He will then visit Yad Vashem with the Israeli PM – but the visit to the Holocaust memorial is scheduled to last only 15 minutes, instead of the hour.

He will end the visit with a speech at the Israel Museum, where he is expected to lay out his broad vision of a peace deal.

On Tuesday afternoon he will leave Israel for a visit to the Vatican.

On Sunday, during a speech in Riyadh, Mr Trump had identified Iran and its support for Hezbollah as being responsible for instability in the region and for “vowing the destruction of Israel.”

He urged the three religions of the Middle East to work together to achieve peace.
