Riots sweep Jerusalem ahead of Arab teenager's burial

articlemain

Hundreds of Palestinians have clashed with police in East Jerusalem ahead of the funeral of a murdered teenager.

There were also clashes on the Temple Mount as tension grew before the burial of 17-year-old Mohammed Hussein Abu Khdair.

He was found dead on Wednesday morning. Investigations are still taking place to find out whether he was killed by Israelis in a suspected revenge attack following the murder of three Israeli teenagers.

Hamas had earlier been said to be considering ceasing rocket attacks against Israel as part of a potential ceasefire brokered by Egypt.

Israel had responded to the shelling from Gaza by increasing its military presence along the border.

Arab youths and police clashed near the Muslim holy site on the first day of Ramadan. Officers responded with stun grenades after rocks were thrown.

The Palestinian teenager will be buried on Friday afternoon. A post-mortem examination took place on Thursday. Investigators believe the boy was killed either by settlers or in a possible family “honour killing”.
