Orkney student killed in Jerusalem bomb

articlemain

The British woman who died following Wednesday’s bomb attack in Jerusalem had been in Israel just a few months.

Mary Jean Gardner, a 59-year old woman from Orkney in Scotland, was studying at Hebrew University when she boarded the 74 bus.

An evangelical Christian, she was in Israel for a six month period to improve her language skills for her work translating the Bible for a Togo tribe.

More than 30 others were wounded in the blast, the first to hit the city in seven years. Twelve people are still being treated in hospital.

On Thursday, 25 hours after the attack, the UK's ambassador to Israel Matthew Gould and British Consul General in Jerusalem Sir Vincent Fean laid a wreath on behalf of the British Government at the scene of the explosion.

Sir Vincent said: "We utterly condemn this attack. What we saw here yesterday was a painful reminder of decades of violence experienced by the residents of this holy city.

"We hope and pray that we will not see a return to those dark days."
