Israelis put second ‘Jewish extremist’ in administrative detention

articlemain

Israel has detained a second alleged Jewish extremist in line with the prime minister’s vow to crack down on “terror” .

Eviatar Slonim was arrested on Tuesday night, accused of belonging to an extremist organisation and placed in ‘administrative detention’.

Up until now, administrative detention, whereby a suspect is held without trial in the absence of sufficient evidence to prosecute, has been used almost entirely against Palestinian militants.

Israel’s security cabinet approved extending administrative detention to Jewish militants earlier this week, following the ‘price tag’ attacks last week that saw a Palestinian baby die in a house fire.

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to crack down on “terror”, saying: “The State of Israel deals forcefully with terror, regardless of who the perpetrators are.”

Mr Slonim had previously been charged over a stone throwing incident at the home of a Palestinian family in 2011 and was the second Jewish extremist to be detained under the new rules.

Mordechai Meyer, 18, from the East Jerusalem settlement of Maale Adumim, was arrested for suspected involvement in an arson attack on an iconic Christian church in Galilee in June, and has been sentenced to six months’ administrative detention.

Also arrested this week was Mordechai Ettinger. Mr Ettinger, 23, who is said to have been the Israeli police's most-wanted extremist suspect, is accused of ‘nationalist crimes’ and ‘involvement in an extremist Jewish organisation.’

However, Ettinger’s lawyer, Yuval Zemer said of the arrest: "There was no urgent need to arrest here, other than some kind of desire to show, 'Here, we're doing something, here, we're arresting,'…Of course, what is better than the number one most-wanted target?"

Police maintain that they had still not arrested anyone related to the attacks in Douma at the weekend .
