Police have raided the house of Israeli Chief Rabbi Yona Metzger.

On Thursday morning, Rabbi Metzger was interrogated on suspicion of bribery, fraud and money laundering. In 2004 the National Fraud Unit launched an investigation when they suspected he had accepted illicit perks while on holiday.

In 2005, Rabbi Metzger was accused of accepting thousands of pounds’ worth of discounts from Israeli hotels.

At the time, the chief rabbi suspended himself from the bench of the High Rabbinic Court and from his membership of the committee for the appointment of rabbinic judges. The then Attorney General, Menachem Mazuz, reprimanded the rabbi, but did not indict him.
