Israeli and Palestinian documentaries make Oscars shortlist

articlemain

Films made by Israelis and Palestinians have been named among the contenders in the best documentary category for the 2013 Academy Awards.

The Gatekeepers, directed by Israeli Dror Moreh tells the history of Israel through the stories of six former directors of Shin Bet, Israel’s security service.

The six interviewees led the organisation between 1980 and 2011, and they speak candidly about their experiences in office and fears for Israel’s future direction.

5 Broken Cameras is directed by Palestinian farmer Emad Burnat and Israeli filmmaker Guy Davidi. It tells the story of non-violent resistance in the West Bank village Bil’in, which is surrounded by Israeli settlements.

The feature records the destruction of each of Mr Burnat’s cameras during filming.

The final short-list of five nominees in the category will be announced on January 10.
