The State Prosecutor's Office is expected not to press charges against Labour and Zionist Union leader Isaac Herzog after a police investigation failed to find evidence that he was aware of an allegedly illegal payment to his 2013 primaries campaign.

The allegations, which surfaced earlier this year, were among the factors that scuppered a potential coalition deal between Likud and Zionist Union. The agreement would have seen Mr Herzog become foreign minister in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government.

For the last six months, police have been investigating an alleged payment by an Israeli businessman to senior members of Mr Herzog's leadership primary campaign in 2013.

According to the investigation, NIS 40,000 (£8,000) was donated to the campaign by the owner of a private company whose business was affected by legislation that was in progress in the Knesset at the time. The donation was not reported to the State Comptroller, as required by law.
