A bus has exploded in central Tel Aviv in what Israeli police said was a terrorist attack.

Emergency services organisation Magen David Adom said that seven people were injured in the attack, with at least three sustaining "severe" injuries.

The bus was on Shaul Hamelech Street, near to the Tel Aviv museum and the Kirya, Israel's national defence headquarters, although the number of the route has not yet been confirmed.

Police are believed to have apprehended a person thought to be involved in the attack after a chase through the streets of Tel Aviv.

Micky Rosenfeld, the police spokesman, said that security was in place to prevent further terrorist attacks.

According to Ofir Gendelman, a spokesman for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, "another bomb, which did not explode, was found on the bombed bus in Tel Aviv". He said police were combing the area for terrorist involved in the attack.

According to the BBC, Hamas has claimed responsibility for the bombing.

Fighting between Israel and Gaza is in its seventh day, with the US Secretary of State now in the region holding talks with officials on both sides.

Hillary Clinton is expected to travel to Cairo later today, where ceasefire discussions are understood to be ongoing. Rocket fire over the Gaza border has continued while the Israeli Army has targeted further sites in strikes on Gaza.

On Monday two Israelis, one of whom was a soldier, were killed. The Palestinian death toll now stands at at least 130.
