A newborn has been pronounced dead in a Jerusalem hospital days after he was delivered prematurely when his mother was injured in a drive-by shooting in the West Bank.

The baby’s mother, 21, was seven months pregnant when she was gravely wounded in the attack near the settlement of Ofra on Sunday evening.

She was hospitalised along with her husband. The couple were reported to be in a stable condition.

Five other people sustained light injuries in the shooting, which the IDF said took place from a moving vehicle and targeted civilians trying to hitchhike from the nearby junction.

Security forces launched a manhunt for the attackers. Camera footage from the scene showed a white vehicle slowing down near the hitchhiking stop and stopping briefly. After shots are fired from the vehicle, IDF soldiers shoot at the car, which is then seen continuing north on Route 60.

Hamas praised the terrorist attack late on Sunday, saying: “Despite all the attempts to uproot the resistance to the occupation, the action on [Sunday] evening proves that the principle of resistance is still alive and beating.”
