PETER MORRISON TROPHY ROUND FOUR

MACCABI LONDON LIONS MASTERS vs BRADY MACCABI

It’s out of the fire and into the frying pan for the Maccabi London Lions Masters who will be looking to claim another top-flight scalp in the shape of Brady Maccabi.

Saul Conway was their match-winner in the last round when they eliminated holders Hendon United in extra-time, and although this may surprise some, I’m making them favourite to progress on Sunday.

The Masters recently enjoyed a weekend break at The Grove and manager Dan Jacobs must be considering using it as their base ahead of the crunch clash at the Lane.

No doubt Jacobs and co would have been briefed by Will Beresford and Ryan Springer following last week’s 3-0 win for Lions A over Brady who saw their three-match winning run halted.

Brady are 5-1 to win but I can’t see danger man Reiss Mogilner getting the service to test one of the best defences in Jewish football. And with Paul Hakim, Adam Stolerman, Lee Cash and Conway up top, they’re not too shabby at the other end either.

The winner of this tie will face second division RC UK FC at home in the next round.

JC team news: Goalkeeper Russell Corin faces a late fitness test on a hip injury. Player-manager Dan Jacobs is on standby.

POSSIBLE SQUADS:

OAKWOOD A vs FC TEAM A

As you will see in this week’s Caro’s Column (when you purchase this week’s Jewish Chronicle!), I’ve gone big on Oakwood and their fans will be hoping it isn’t the kiss of death.

Having witnessed back-to-back wins over Hendon United, I was blown away by their quality from back to front and can confirm they would be worthy champions. There are simply no weak links.

After’s Sunday’s visit of FC Team, the mighty Oaks have a couple of weeks off before travelling to last season’s champions North London Raiders A. So there’s no reason to hold back against Mitch Young’s men.

Oakwood’s winning mentality and strength in depth have been major factors in them holding a four-point lead going into the latest round of matches. Goalkeeper Dean Caplin has produced the big saves when they matter most, while the back four of Harvey Kaye, Alex Lee, Dale Bradman and Lee Warner have been rock solid.

In midfield, Thomas Prais looked a class act last week. Not many players get the better of Hendon captain Ari Last, but Prais won the battle. Kyle Bentwood and recent arrival Leor Sidle have stepped up in the big matches, while Dave Woolman, Rafi Stone and Brad Wine have run themselves into the ground.

Oakwood joint-manager Dan Kristall took time to tell JC Sport about how the double-header win over Hendon has galvanised his squad: "After the hard work of the last fortnight, our league fixtures continue.

"We face four really tough games in our run in so I’d still make Hendon and Redbridge favourites for the title, but we have given ourselves a great chance. We knew that only six points from these two matches would put us back in the race and that’s exactly what we achieved.

"That has been down to hard work and executing two game-plans to perfection. We didn’t win either game by luck, we won because we turned up with quality squads of 16 men each time, defended superbly and took our chances when they came.

"We really haven’t looked back since that terrible Morrison defeat. It seems to have been the wake up call that everyone needed. Out of nowhere, we are now over-subscribed each week which means some very difficult decisions for Blanky and I. We now move on…

Looking ahead to the FC Team game, Kristall added: "We face a tough opposition on Sunday who took points off us earlier in the season and we know just how difficult a test this will be.

"They have a physical threat up front and caused us all sorts of problems at their place in a game that we should have been out of sight in by the time they pulled a goal back.

"For everything that could go wrong in a game, it did! We had to make three substitutions by half-time losing Kyle, Dale and Luke. We had Max Clynes sent off and yet from 3-2 down we somehow found a way to nick a point which on the day felt like two dropped but in May, it might feel like a point gained.

"We know that we must be at our very best on Sunday to take the points. Four games to go… bring them on!"

The end of the season cannot come soon enough for FC Team. Recent defeats have seen them concede seven times against Brady and Hendon and they need to regroup and reassess over the some. And I hope come back bigger and stronger next season.

They are 12-1 to win on Sunday and I can’t see them winning many individual battles, let alone the collective ones.

JC team news: Brad Wine is out for Oakwood and he faces a nervous wait to see if he will be back for Raiders in March.Guy Helman is still on international duty in Wales, Alex Lee is away. The students are available for selection and Lee Warner plays his final game of the season before going travelling.

POSSIBLE SQUADS:

OAKWOOD (from): Dean Caplin, Harvey Kaye, Dale Bradman, Lee Warner, Thomas Prais, Kyle Bentwood, Dave Woolman, Rafi Stone, Leor Sidle, Sam Cantor, Dan Cohen, Dave Rose

FC TEAM (from): David Gordon, Daniel Breger, Andrei Grayson, Gary Hill, James Milman, Danny Moss, Connor Perl, Lorian Madanes, Adam Rones, Richard Salmon, Jason Wood, Mitchell Young, Eddie Sternberg

WOODFORD WANDERERS vs MACCABI LONDON LIONS A

The Lions are unchanged for Sunday’s trip east to Essex as they look to finish the weekend in the top three.

They go into the match in top shape after a 3-0 win over stablemates Brady, courtesy of goals from Adam Arnold, Alex Taylor and Brad Sharp.

With Jon Ellis and Sam Arghebant returning the starting line-up, the Lions had an abundance of quality and experience.  Max Hassell, Nick Smith, Alex Taylor were rock solid at the back and they were organised and well-drilled from back to front.

No doubt, travelling supporters will arrive hopeful of seeing their heroes complete a league double against a Woodford team they beat 3-2 in September. Ricky Rinder, Alex Rose and Adam Arnold were the scorers that day.

But joint-manager Will Beresford is taking nothing for granted. He told JC Sport: “We’re expecting another tough test this weekend.”

Woodford appear consigned to relegation. Fairlop has been anything but a fortress for Daryl Kay’s troops this season and their last two results there – 0-7 against Oakwood and 0-4 against Hendon – tells you they are struggling to bridge the gap in class against the top teams.

Manager Daryl Kay told JC Sport: "After last week's game being called off, annoyingly, we have a tough game against Lions to look forward to.

"From what I hear, they’ve been drafting in some of their Saturday players so we expect a very tough game indeed.

"It's my birthday night out tomorrow night so we will no doubt be a bit hungover, but I’ll still expect nothing less than 100 per cent from the team."

So anything other than a comfortable victory for the Lions would be a surprise.

POSSIBLE SQUADS:

LIONS (from): James Gershfield, Max Hassell, Nick Smith, Alex Taylor, Jonny Ellis, Richard Gold, Jamie Jackson, Ben Lampert, James Gold, Harry Marlow, Adam Arnold, Sam Arghebant, Alex Rose, Brad Sharp

WOODFORD (from): Ben Rosenthal, Adam Shafron, Jerome Marks, Paul Biller, Alex Aviram, Ricky Fox, Darryl Green, David Green, Jason Patmore, James Ryan, Tom Alexander, Ryan Silkman, Dan Wexler

Venue - Fairlop, Ref – David Lazarus, KO – 10am

DC Prediction: Woodford 1 Lions 3

SPEC FC vs NORTH LONDON RAIDERS A

It’s no coincidence that Raiders have won both games and kept two clean sheet since inspirational captain David Rhodes returned from injury.

L’Orange hardly needed to break sweat in the first leg of their double-header against relegation-haunted SPEC FC. Hat-trick hero Matt Stock led them a merry dance on a day they ran in six goals.

Manager Dan Shafron sent an ominous warning to SPEC FC fans when he told JC Sport: “Our intention is to better our performance from last week and fine tune in certain areas.

“SPEC will want to give a good account of themselves and I have no doubt Ricky will drill that in to his boys.

“We can’t rest on our laurels and think that we’ll have it all our way like last Sunday. If we think like that, we’ll only make the game difficult for ourselves.

“This is a game where I expect all our boys to play for a starting place in next week’s Morrison quarter final. If they keep that in mind, we should come away with three points.

SPEC have conceded 47 goals in 12 matches. I fear it could be a long morning for them. Player-manager Ricky Lawrence told JC Sport: "After our 6-0 drubbing last week, the only way is up!"

Damage limitation will be their best bet as they dare not go toe-to-toe with a star-studded Raiders team.

JC team News: Ben Ellis, Jake Doffman, Joe Cohen and JJ Spiro return to the NLR squad.

POSSIBLE SQUADS:

RAIDERS (from): Jake Doffman, Josh Morris, Alex Bloch, David Rhodes (capt), David J Cohen, David Dinkin, Jonny Kay, Nick Lewis, Liron Mannie, Matt Stock, Oscar Wagner, Jono Rochwerger, Ben Ellis, Joe Cohen

SPEC (from): Simon Roth, Daniel Amram, Simon Bagel, Dan Cohen, Alex Kaye, Jon Kaye, Darren Lawrence, Ricky Lawrence, Laurence Rosenthal, Sam Roth, Elliott Wallis

Venue – Hertswood, Ref – Robert Benardout, KO – 10am

JC star man: Oscar Wagner (Raiders)

REDBRIDGE JEWISH CARE B vs FINCHLEY CITY

Sunday is a huge day in terms of the race for promotion in Division One, with four of the top five going head-to-head. The meeting between Redbridge B and Finchley will not disappoint.

The east Londoners will put their unbeaten record on the line against ambitious new boys Finchley, with manager Sam Rank determined not to let off-the-pitch activities unsettled his squad.

‘New celebrity’ Kane Hopps has been the talk of the town following the verbal attack by Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville last weekend. I found Neville’s verbal attack OTT and totally unnecessary. As a lifelong Arsenal fan who travels up and down the country, Hopps has every right to share his feelings about who manages Arsenal. But on Sunday he will be fully focused on helping RJC claim their ninth league win of the season.

Looking ahead to the game, Rank told JC Sport: “Sunday provides the first of many tests for the boys. They are very determined to win the Division One title this year. They work very hard on the training field and on Sundays.

“A big very point this week the boys have discussed is if we are on our game, no opposition in our division will get near us.

“The training session the boys did this week was to a very high standard and if this work-rate, commitment and ability is taken onto the pitch on Sunday, their will only be one winner.”

Rank gave JC Sport an insight into what he knows about Sunday’s opponents. “We played Finchley in a pre-season friendly and you could tell they were a new team. However, as the league table displays, they have improved dramatically and their cup run to the semi-final of Cyril Ankstein, where they will be facing RJC A. With no game for the A Team, I am sure Jon Jacobs will have his Scouts at this game for him.

“Defensively Finchley can be found out, but attacking wise, they could cause the our backline a few issues.

“But with assistant manager Richie Caplin and super cat keeper Scott Shear marshalling the troops at the back, I would hope this would cancel out the attacking threat that Finchley have.

“Sunday game will be blockbuster, a great game for neutral and lots of television coverage with Brad Gayer and Kane Hopps involved.”

Finchley showed great character to come from two goals down to draw with Raiders B last weekend. Jono Gaon and Oli Sade registered, and they could have won it had Sade converted a penalty. But like any good player, he will put that behind him and focus only on the task at hand.

Finchley have been a breath of fresh air to the MGBSFL this season and they will take a lot of support with them to what will arguably be their toughest test yet.

Boss Joel Holder told JC Sport: “Sunday is a must-win game for us if we want to win the title this season.

“We have been preparing for this game for a while and I believe the boys are good enough to go to Essex and return to Finchley with the three points.

“Redbridge have conceded just 10 goals this season in the league, so it's vital we take our chances and are as clinical as possible in front of goal.

“They are a very organised and disciplined team with a lot of quality, but so are we, so I am expecting a very competitive game.”

Finchley have beaten Scrabble home and away and drawn against a strong NLR team. Yes they were well-beaten by Lions B but they have come on in leaps and bounds since then.

Holder went on to say: “We have started slowly in our last few games, so I hope we come out the blocks quickly and start dictating the play.

“February is make or break for us in the league. We can't afford any slip-ups as the teams at the top of the league are very close.

“A lot of the big teams are playing each other over the next few weeks, so a result on Sunday will give us the opportunity to show we are genuine title contenders.

Much depends on which A-team players come in for Redbridge. If it’s the usual suspects that could make the difference.

JC team news: RJC are at “full-strength for the first of many big games against teams near us in the league table. Den Ben Yosef, “the big-game player, is raring to go”. New Celebrity Kane Hopps has asked for Gary Neville to be at the game after last week’s “idiot comment” at Stanford Bridge at him, I would imagine the Sky Cameras will be at this game this weekend”. Sam Sollosi and Ryan Cole could be drafted in.

POSSIBLE SQUADS:

REDBRIDGE (from): Scott Shear, Daniel Andrews, Daniel Bean, Matthew Berkley, Richie Caplin, Kane Hopps, Ben Chernoff, Jamie Bernstein, Bradley Gayer, Adam Goldman, Joe Jordan, Scott McKenzie, Adam Noble, Anthony Cope, Sam Moss, Sam Rank, Ryan Cole, Sam Sollosi

FINCHLEY (from): Yossi Lanning, Josh Aziz, Shim Bensoor, Eli Davila, Josh Gaon, Josh Kanter, Rafi Kon, Gabriel Krieger, Oliver Sade, Daniel Sinclair, Jono Gaon, Dan Polak, Moshe Fehler, Daniel Kozielek, Sam Leader

ATHLETIC BILBAUM vs FAITHFOLD A

Supporters of Bilbaum and Faithfold are preparing for a relegation six-pointer of monster proportions.

Sunday is effectively a must-win for the Baums who sit four points behind the Superhoops who have a game in hand.

The Baums will be on a revenge mission following a crushing 4-0 defeat in September and given the visitors haven’t played much since the turn of the year it could be a good time to play them.

Like managers Rob Shooman and John Nitka, I expected more from Faithfold this season. They have been held back by availability issues and inconsistency but they remain dangerous opponents for anyone in the first division.

Co-manager Rob Shooman told JC Sport: “We’re really looking forward to this Sunday, having not played very much this year - one game against Redbridge B away , since December 2016 - and having put in a great performance , it was another week off last week.”

After two contests against promotion-chasing Scrabble FC and Redbridge B, I can see Sunday being something of a leveller for the Baums in what will be a fast-paced contest between two committed teams.

JC team news:  Faithfold “are struggling again with players availability and will not be at our strongest but hope to put out a squad of players that will try and give Bilbaum a game”.

POSSIBLE SQUADS:

FAITHFOLD (from): Daniel Kosky, Dan Beresford, Josh Martin, Marc Charles, Jonny Gahan, Stuart Haring, Jonny Horwitz, Richard Jaffe, Elliott Kaye, Daniel Kent, James Kent, James Lee

BILBAUM (from): Gal Alkalay, Sam Barr, Jacob Brunner, Ben Cantopher, Daniel Goldhill, Eli Gottlieb, Jacob Holder, Elliott Kindler, Ben Lewis, Barnaby Powell, Ben Bell, Julius Judah, Jonah Gordon-Boyd

MACCABI LONDON LIONS B vs NORTH LONDON RAIDERS B

Raiders will be looking to close the gap on leaders Lions B to three points when they travel to the Lane.

They blew a 2-0 lead against promotion rivals Finchley City last week in a thrilling encounter that could have gone either way.

Michael Wolff was versatility personified, putting in excellent shifts in midfield and in goal. His stunning penalty save was worth the admission fee alone.

2-1 winners over Blancos last week, thanks largely to another master-class from Benji Weinberger, this is the start of a crucial part in MLL's season. They face Finchley, Redbridge and Lions A over the coming weeks.

Sam Marchant's troops have won four on the spin and they have their tails up.

Lions are the form team and they have home advantage, and that's why I'm going for them in what promises to be a top-quality affair.

POSSIBLE SQUADS:

LIONS (from): James Harpin, Nathan Anders, Daniel Behar, Edward Brafman, Ozzy Doron, Dom Feldman, Daniel Green, Sammy Kingston, Dean Rosenthal, Nathan Schindler, Ben Weinberger, Daniel Fattal

SCRABBLE FC vs LOS BLANCOS

This game has home banker written all over it as high-flying Scrabble FC look to complete the double over Blancos.

This game ended in a narrow 2-1 win for Scrabble back in October, when Josh Bharier and Danny Sherman saw them them, and Scrabble have a big squad to select from on Sunday, with no new injury worries...

Scrabble are in ruthless form at the minute, with wins over Bilbaum, Oakwood and Hendon under their belts. And I have a feeling Hendon will go the same way.

"We've been on a three-game winning run and this is breeding a lot confidence," Scrabble boss Ray Abrahams told JC Sport.

"It's taken us to within a couple of points of top spot and having already played most of our games against the top sides the boys know that if we keep getting the results we need we can be a real promotion threat as our rivals all have to play each other.

"Because of this these other teams will naturally have to drop points one way or another which is to our advantage.

"It's a very tight league though this season and Blancos have been unlucky to lose games by very narrow margins against top sides, so we will get punished if we are not on top of our game against them because they are a good side.

"Full credit to our squad though because we've had a lot of injuries to key players this season and it's been difficult to keep a settled side but they are all playing for the shirt and giving 100 per cent to the club which is all we can ask for."

Nick Grosse expressed pride after his Blancos team went down fighting against table-toppers Lions B last weekend.

Josh Cramer was rewarded for his outstanding performance with a place in my JC Team of the Week. And I can see him being given another testing morning by a Scrabble team that will go for the jugular.

POSSIBLE SQUADS:

SCRABBLE (from): Adam Zaidman, Joshua Bharier, Rob Blackman, Elliott Espinoza, Daniel Green, Zac McLeod, Sam Stead, Dan Stock, Zac Summerfield, Tom Prevezer, Josh Tiano, Danny Sherman

BLANCOS (from): Nick Grosse, Joel Barnett, Joshua Cramer, Sam Cramer, Joseph Davis, Svi Freedman, Benjy Israel, Avishai Kestenbaum, Joel Kutner, Louie Libbert, Elliott Moslawy, Mitch Green, Jeff Gross

RC UK FC vs NORTH LONDON RAIDERS C

RC UK FC are one of a number of teams vying for a top two finish. Win their games in hand and they will climb into second place. Simple as that. But manager Avi Markiewicz will look no further than Sunday’s meeting with Raiders C.

The poor state of the RC UK pitch means the game will be played at Brunel – home of Raiders – something that will surely boost their chances. That said they did concede seven against the Dons last week.

Boss Sam Rose told JC Sport: “We’re looking to bounce back after last week’s disappointment and what better way for us to be spurred on than avenging our worst defeat of the season against RCUK?

“For sure it'll be a tough game but we're confident last week was just a blip and we can get a positive result at Brunel on Sunday.”

RC UK have dusted themselves down from their recent narrow defeat against Redbridge. And like Rose says, their fans have fond memories of the first meeting when Markiewicz bagged five in their biggest win to date.

He told JC Sport: “Last time we played Raiders we won 11-0, but we know this time around it will be a lot more difficult.

“Raiders will be hurting from that and will be ready for us. We will take nothing for granted.”

Sunday will come down to the Raiders defence against the RC UK attack. And goals are guaranteed.

JC team news: A huge mazel tov to RC UK FC’s Eli Shebson who is getting married this week in Israel. But it means his team will be missing a fair few regulars, amongst them are Gideon Caller, Avi Mocton and Eli (obviously, unless there are any last-minute nerves!) Dudi Edreyi is in Bangkok while Yisroel Lewis is in Manchester but they welcome some new arrivals and this week Darra Abdolrazaghi and Moishe Lewis are in line for their debuts.

POSSIBLE SQUADS:

RC UK (from):  Joseph Corin, David Brown, Gideon Caller, Dudi Edreyi, Leor Harel, Jake Lewis, Aaron Luftig, Avi Mocton, Dovi Vogel, Avi Markiewicz, Jonti Aremband, Zalmy Cohen, Josh Shaffer

RAIDERS (from): Richard Bloom, Andrew Cohen, David Domb, Matthew Leader, Adam Leveson, Daniel Lovat, Jay Rosenthal, Rob Samuelson, Jonny Blain, Nick Haringman, Ricky Zeiderman. Sub: Matt Geppert

CATFORD & BROMLEY MACCABI vs BOCA JEWNIORS

Life is looking far rosier for Catford following two wins in three matches, and they will be confident of securing another against Boca.

It makes such a difference when everyone is pulling in the same direction and the 2-1 success over title-chasing Redbridge C gave player-manager Jeff Gotch a massive lift.

He told JC Sport: "We’ve picked up our for recent weeks and want to end the season how we started.

“We know it’s too late to be aiming for top three but we will definitely try our best to get as high as possible – it’s not a fluke we’ve beaten Redbridge and RC UK and drawn with Temple Fortune – we just need to find a consistency for a whole season.

“I finally have more than 11 this week with 14 available – three points and a healthy win are on our radar.”

Boca were left reeling by an 8-1 demolition against leaders L'Equipe last time out. Their confidence took a real knock and this is a bad time for them to meet the Cats.

MILL HILL DONS vs HERTSWOOD VALE

Sunday is being talked about the Cohen vs. Cohen derby with star striker brothers Josh and Zach being pinned against each other.

The Dons now have a top four finish in their sights following their high-scoring win over Raiders C.

Manager Brandon Hamme told JC Sport: "After another fantastic performance last week, I'm feeling confident that we can get all three points again this week.

"On Sunday we will see the Cohen brothers collide and also cousins vs cousins, it is bound to be an emotional affair - especially for Ben Bazini (the former Vale superstar). We hope the Hertswood Vale fans remember all he did during his time at the club and give him a warm reception.

"We have heard rumours that they have signed the 'Jewish Kyle Walker' earlier this week and we have prepared appropriately by putting him up against Jason '4 Goals' Weldon. I can see that battle being where the game is lost or won.

"We feel confident ahead of the game but we won't be overly complacent."

Hertswood have made a good fist of their last five matches. Scoring goals hasn't been an issue, but keeping them out has.

Hertswood joint-manager Jacob Emanuel told JC Sport; "Although I won't understate the importance of Josh Cohen, who has hit the net seven times for us this season, there are another 10 players who will be lining up alongside him in the famous maroon and yellow shirt, and of course, there is no I in team.

"Having said that, I have no doubt that Josh will be trying to get one over on big brother Zach on Sunday whilst securing our first (non-voided) three points in our maiden league campaign.

"I'm not sure what to expect Sunday in terms of a result, but one thing is for sure...there will be goals in this one! Despite sitting 18 points above us, the Dons have conceded a league-high 53 goals but we know of their ability to score goals too!

"Our guys are up for the challenge on Sunday, and are confident of bringing the points back to Borehamwood come midday."

Goals will be on the menu at Mill Hill Park, as will another high-scoring Mill Hill win.

JC team news:  Joel Sinclair Horne is out for the Dons. He has taken a last-minute trip in order to avoid going in goal on Sunday. Ben Bazini is still coming back to full fitness but he will be in the stands. Sammy Hakimian, Harry Moss and Harry Cohen remain out injured.

Sunday sees the return of Boca captain Josh Wood from a shattered thumb, and another stint for Jack Shulman in goal whilst regular keeper Yaacov Goldin is on his honeymoon. Danny Elia (brother of co-player Elio) could be in line for his debut to ensure an abundance of brotherly love in Mill Hill.

POSSIBLE SQUADS:

DONS (from): Zach Cohen, Adam Isaacs, Sam Kahn, Zach Perez, Joseph Reece, Jordan Rinsler, Mikey Salem, Jason Weldon, Brandon Hamme, Richard Hayim, Ryan Kramer

HERTSWOOD (from): Jack Shulman, Adam Cohen, Ben Davis, Jacob Emanuel, Danny Feuer, Josh Goodman, Charles Hollis, Jack Shulman, Joshua Webber, Josh Wood

TEMPLE FORTUNE vs REAL HENDON

Simon Linden week turned a massive offer from China for star striker Jordan Sharifian but he assures me his focus is firmly on Sunday's meeting with Real.

Sharifian is one of the leading contenders for Division Two Player of the Year and it's no surprise that the bids are coming in, but he has MGBSFL promotion to consider too.

Fortune have been starved of action of late, playing just once since Chanukah, and their fans have fond memories of their first meeting with Real which finished 4-3 in their favour. Sharifian bagged three that day.

Real find themselves in the wrong half of the table, but they remain dangerous opponents with goals threats across the pitch.

They don't draw many which leads me to believe this will be an end to end affair, one that will have the neutrals talking for several weeks.

POSSIBLE SQUADS:

FORTUNE (from): Michael Goldberg, Rob Jay, Jake Marks, Adam Speck, Brett Stead, Gab Stone, Eshed Rahav, Gideon Wetrin, Michael Woolf, Jordan Sharifian, Gavin Levy, Zach Rich, Jonathan Cohen, Adam Lenz

REAL (from): Dov Owen, Rafi Addlestonem, Ben Cohen, Richard Cohen, Ben Goldberg, Chaim Gothold, Yossi Hoffman, Motty Korman, Zvi Noe, Hezzie Raymond, Benni Sluckis, Chaim Strom
