Honey, chocolate and plenty to view

Award-winning Honey & Co chefs, husband and wife team Itamar Srulovich and Sarit Packer are busy. Their first book is to be published in June. In the same month, they will also be appearing at Gefiltefest 2014 on 15th and at Hampstead Garden Suburb’s Proms at St Jude’s on the 22nd (www.promsatstjudes.org.uk).
They are also filming new a television series A Marriage of Flavours. The television show features the pair cooking Middle Eastern dishes, interspersed with couples talking about food and love in When Harry met Sally-style interviews.

The current issue of Jewish Quarterly features notes from a roundtable discussion on kosher food in the UK. Pop-up entrepreneurs Kosher Roast, Zest chef Eran Tibi (who hosted the gathering), cook and blogger Judy Jackson, JVS director Lara Smallman and I took part in the debate. The debate, chaired by JQ’s guest editor Keith Kahn-Harris, covered independent mashgiachs and issues holding kosher food back.

The Jewish Vegetarian Society is currently recruiting volunteers to set-up and run their new monthly Foodies’ Film Club. The club is intended to combine ethical food and films - a novel way for people to enjoy a delicious meal together and explore the origin of what’s on our plates. Visit: jvs.org.uk.

Ashkenazi and Sephardi contestants are lining up for a cook-off re-match at Gefiltefest 2014 on Sunday 15th June. Eran Tibi and Fabienne Viner-Luzzato will defend their title against Ashkenazi rivals Alan Rosenthal and Denise Phillips. The oven gloves are off! Check www.gefiltefest.org for details.

Chocolate shwarmas are taking Israel by storm. Rather than a rotating chunk of meat, ‘choco-kebabs’ are made from shavings of milk and white chocolate, wrapped in a pita or laffa and topped with halva, dulce de leche, cream and marshmallows.

Michael Leventhal is the founder of the food charity Gefiltefest, www.gefiltefest.org
