WATCH: Newborn rare sand kittens frolic at Israeli zoo

Rotem, a sand cat at the Ramat Gan Safari, gave birth three weeks ago to three kittens who are bolstering the fragile numbers of this species.

Sand cats - the only cats able to survive in deserts - have been listed as near-threatened because of their small population worldwide (and are considered extinct in Israel) and declining numbers — only 200 survive in captivity. Efforts are being made for conservation.
