If Tim Minchin's witty lyrics serve Roald Dahl's much-loved story better than his less inventive melodies, this hurricane-force RSC production never gives you time to dwell on the fact. Every scene is a tour de force in Matthew Warchus's stunning production. Audiences will gawp at the astonishingly well-drilled children in the cast, and at the audacity with which Bertie Carvel, as the psychotic headteacher, dishes out cruelty to Matilda and the other pupils in his charge. Has comeuppance ever been so sweet?
