Teenagers in medal hunt in Philadelphia

JCC Max Benaim and Libby Walker have been named as the flag-bearers for Team GB's 43-athlete squad taking part at the JCC Maccabi Games in Philadelphia next month.

Tennis starlet Benaim and swimmer Walker have been rewarded for their efforts in raising funds for the trip.

They were praised by co-manager Brian Green, who alongside his wife Helena will spearhead the squad, which leaves for America on August 11.

Green said: "They went way beyond the call of duty in the fund-raising stakes so we're recognising their efforts by letting them lead the team out at the Opening ceremony.

"Max did the Maccabi GB fun run on the day of his barmitzvah and, later that night, went round tables asking for money from his guests."

More than 1,500 youngsters aged 13-16 will compete with GB joined by squads from Mexico, Panama, Israel, Canada, as well as the host nation.

GB won 99 medals at last year's event and Green believes they "will be hard-pressed" to bring home a similar number. Green expressed delight at the fact that "a GB squad is taking a lacrosse team to a Maccabi Games for the first time".
