HENRY SWERNER CUP FINAL
CHIGWELL ATHLETIC 4 BRADY MACCABI 1

Richard Slater expressed his pride after Chigwell Athletic secured the double after lifting the Henry Swerner Cup at Rowley Lane.

The east Londoners clinched the Maccabi Masters League title last weekend and manager Slater was toasting double delight following a resounding 4-1 victory over Brady Maccabi.

A triumphant Slater commented: “What can I say? I'm so proud of the players this season. Everyone gave their all for nine months, and this is the reward.”

Daniel Sugarman opened the scoring inside five minutes with a far-post following a precision cross by Steve Summers.

Chigwell doubled their advantage on the stroke of half-time when Dean Nyman was fouled in the penalty area, allowing top-scorer Adam Stolerman to convert from the spot, tucking his shot into the bottom right-hand corner.

Brady halved the deficit soon after, scoring from the rebound after Chigwell keeper Rob Shepherdson had saved the initial effort.

Player-manager Slater played a part in Chigwell’s third goal as they restored their two-goal cushion. He released Summers who beat his marker before finding Sugarman who slotted home gleefully at the far post.

And it was left to Summers to apply the gloss, swapping roles with the industrious Sugarman whose invited cross was tucked home.

Slater said: “The spirit and togetherness has been a massive factor in winning the double this season.
We had a brilliant squad, but you still need to go and do it.

"Today, at 2-1, we showed superb character to go on to score a third and fourth when Brady had their takes up scoring so early in the second half.

"Credit to Brady who gave their all. It was a really tough battle for 65 minutes.

"We'll enjoy it now, but the aim is to do it all over again next season."

Meanwhile, in the final MMFL match of the season, North London Raiders ran out 6-1 winners over HMH thanks to goals from Tony Plaskow (2), Andrew Wolfin, James Cartmell, Don Hodes and Wayne Davidson. Raiders win took them to within two points of Chigwell, but this year belonged to Chigwell.
