Smouldering South up to third

articlemain

South Manchester climbed to third in the Greater Manchester Amateur Cricket League Division Three with a seven-wicket success over Salford Blue Jays.

South won the toss in the battle of the "Jewish" sides and asked Salford to bat. Josh Henry and Rafi Dines got Salford off to a steady start, but they could not put away some initial tight South bowling.

Henry soon fell to David Cohen and Wineberg fell victim to Josh Oehley soon afterwards. That brought Mohammad Arif to the crease who took the South bowling to task. South’s bowling and fielding soon fell apart as he and Dansky built a decent total.

When Dansky fell for a patient 39, it brought the big-hitting Imtiaz Ahmed to the crease and together they flailed the South attack to all parts. Arif finally fell for an excellent 70, being one of Oehley’s three victims.

Some late-order hitting from Usman Ali took Salford’s total to a formidable 214-6 by the close of their innings.

South skipper Steven Glicher later described this as "one of the worst South bowling and fielding performances for many a year, with dropped catches plaguing many of the players," and wayward bowling adding another 26 to the total.

South started their reply well with Rabinovitz and Akiva Lieberman putting on 52 for the first wicket before Rabinovitz lofted a catch to Shahin and was out for 28.

That brought the in-form Simon Jeffries to the crease and he and Lieberman put on 85 for the second wicket before Lieberman fell LBW to Qasim for 58.

South were going well and at the half-way point in their reply, had reached 116. David Cohen then took up the mantle and despatched the Salford bowling to all parts hitting an unbeaten, match-winning 55 which included 10 fours and a six.

Jeffries fell for 30, but Oehley saw them home with some big-hitting with just three overs to spare.
