There was major disappointment for Israel on day one at the Australian Open as Dudi Sela, Shahar Peer and Julia Glushko crashed out of the Singles competition.
Sela looked well set against Jarkko Nieminen of Finland. He won the first set before going down in the second 7-3 on a tie-break. The Israeli no. 1 responded well to win the third on another tie-break, but he lost the last two sets 6-3 to go out in the opening round for the fifth consecutive year.
Shahar Peer was a first-round casualty in the Ladies Singles. She went down 6-4, 6-1 against Claudiu Niculescu of Romania.
Julia Glushko took 26th seed Lucie Safarova before going down 5-7, 6-3, 6-1.
