There is a famous football saying that goes something along the lines of: 'We don't care if we lose every game - as long as we win the league' - and whilst this Lions U15 team had won all but five of their 30 competitive matches this year, it would need one more step to win their first league title as a group of players.

After the fantastic midweek effort against Ware in the Herts County Cup final, in which although they were defeated but came away with much praise for their style and quality of football, the Lions knew that nothing less than three points would put the a point about Borehamwood Youth and win the top division in the Watford Friendly League.

For the first 25 minutes, these Lions were like Real Madrid and shots reigned in at the outstanding Whetstone keeper. The deadlock was broken after great work by Gabriel Saunders and a neat finish at the far post by Tate Nathanson

A penalty and another clinical finish from Lucas Schreiber, who took his final season goal tally to an unbelievable 40 from 25 games. A typical Max Davis thunderbolt then made it 4-0 and the Lions were seemingly cruising to the title.

However from nowhere, Whetstone dragged themselves back into the match and with 20 minutes to go, it was 4-2 and only a great save from keeper Aaron Cowland stopped a third Whetstone goal.

The Lions regrouped and the Lions midfield took control, led by the outstanding Zach Cohen, and only a number of terrific saves from the Whetstone keeper kept the Lions out.

The final whistle was greeted with relief and excitement that each of this Lions team finally has a winners medal to show for all their efforts.

Boss Andrew Myers told JC Sport: "The boys have been truly outstanding and have had many challenges and obstacles that they have had to deal with this year and they really deserve to enjoy their achievements this season."
