Joe Jacobson revealed how Wycombe Wanderers won him over by going the extra mile to seal his signature.

Jacobson penned a two-year deal with the League Two club ahead of the return to pre-season training this week.

The Cardiff-born defender rejected offers from a higher level to join the Buckinghamshire side.

And it was their powers of persuasion that saw Jacobson, 27, opt for Wanderers.

He said: "There were a few options but Wycombe just felt right.They really made a push to sign me.

"I had calls while I was away on holiday from the manager, the chairman and the chief executive.

"I felt really wanted and that goes a long way."

Jacobson has been on the lookout for a new club since being released by Shrewsbury following their relegation last season.

Despite being named player of the year, the Welshman left after a managerial change and a cost-cutting exercise. "I was always confident of finding a club," he said.

"I have played a lot of games in the Football League for a number of years. But there are a lot of good players who I know that are still searching. It's a tough time for a professional player.

"Clubs are cutting budgets and you want to join one on your own terms. I feel Wycombe is a good option and I can't wait to start."

Jacobson, who plans to move from his Shropshire home, hopes his stay in the basement division is short-lived. He said: "It's a hard division to get out of, but Wycombe have some quality players so hopefully I can add something to the squad."

He will face his former Shrewsbury teammates on December 28.

Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth said: "Joe is a great left-back. I know he'll do a strong job for us defensively. But he's got a quality delivery on him and he can chip in with the odd goal as well. We're lucky to have him."
