A first-half double from Michel Bastos condemned Hapoel Tel Aviv to their second consecutive Champions League defeat as they went down 3-1 against Lyon at the Bloomfield Stadium on Wednesday night.
Having lost their Group B opener 2-0 against Benfica, Hapoel found themselves two goals down at the break with the Brazilian striker following up an early penalty with a thunderous strike from the edge of the box.
Hapoel pulled one back after 79 minutes when Dejan Lovren hauled down Douglas da Silva and keeper Vincent Enyeama rifled the resultant penalty past Hugo Lloris to put the Israeli champions back in contention.
However, Lyon's experience came to the fore as they played down the clock and scored a killer third four minutes into injury time with substitute Pjanić slotting home from close range.
Hapoel must look for their first points at Schalke on October 20.
