Richard Goodman sliced nine seconds from his 1,500 metres personal best at the British Milers' Club Gold Standard meeting at Watford.
A measure of his performance is that had he achieved his time of 3:45.77 prior to his 17th birthday last month, it would have cut two seconds from Steve Cram's under-17 British record.
In his first outing of the track season, Goodman made his push for the front with 600 metres to go and a final lap of 56 seconds helped him finish in second place, finishing two metres behind Stephen Scullion of Ireland.
Goodman will complete his AS levels in the next fortnight and then target the World Junior Championships 1,500m qualifying time of 3:44.
