Rob Rackind, manager of Team GB Open Squash, was delighted after his troops romped to victory, taking gold in the men’s open competition on Thursday.

A top-class line-up featuring Dave Lazarus, Sam Levin, 23, and former world No. 69, Matt Crawcour, 41, claimed respective 3-0 victories over Germany, Poland, USA and France.

“All the players performed within their skill level, and all stepped up when they had to.

“We have a good quality team. All the players are at a good level. I’m hoping they provide the core of the team that makes up the Maccabiah squad in two years time.

“We want to build upon a good mix of youth and experience.”

Squash coach Lazarus, 47, was in dazzling form, beating a high-quality French opponent aged 15.

The GB squash team are in the hunt for more medals in tomorrow’s Open singles competition followed by the Masters singles on Sunday.

Rackind added: “We hope to sweep the all the medals and I’m looking for GB to dominate the squash event.”

Lazarus has now achieved a double-figure medal haul in European and Maccabiah Games.

Looking back on the team’s achievement, he said: “I think that there is less depth in the compared to previous Games.

For Crawcour, it was a case of more silverware to add to a trophy cabinet containing gold, which he won with Australia in 1993 and another for GB at the 1985 EMG in Amsterdam. He has competed at three Maccabiahs.
